Jimmy Carter's Quest Continues

While Jimmy Carter began speaking on the importance of human rights while he was president, his actions after his administration are also significant.  What does your reading reveal about how Carter continued to work towards human rights ambitions in the years after his presidency.  What were his most significant achievements?  Why, according to the authors, were his motives in this matter controversial?

  1. One of the sources of controversy regarding Jimmy Carter's motivations would be some criticism he got about his "Blur[ing] US foreign policy with a personal agenda and complicates diplomacy with his ever-changing and unorthodox licenses of authority." Now the licenses of authority are another cause of concern. They also greatly lean toward the subject of whether or not former presidents are in fact MORE powerful once they have left office.

  2. one reason for Carters agenda being slightly controversial was actually the way he approached conflict resolution, for it was more of in the style of a missionary than a diplomat which arguably undermined the U.S. government for the US is decidedly religious neutral and Carter used a tactics that leaned toward religious discussions to obtain the peace treaties. His greatest accomplishments, however, were obtained through this manner such as the panama treaties and other peace treaties with even the likes of dictators.

  3. One of the significant things Carter did was create the Global 2000 program which was an agricultural and health care initiative that seeks to "improve living conditions in more than 20 impoverished nations by promoting food self-reliance, improving health care, sponsoring reforestation efforts, and encouraging sound population policies." WIth the Carter center reeling in donations from many large donors, many of these projects became successful. For example, the effort to eradicate guinea worm disease was such a great achievement because it "would be only the second disease affecting human beings to have been eliminated."

  4. One of the bigger things that jimmy carter did after his presidency was create this Global 2000. This helps about 20 nations which are basically third world countries. It contributes to food reliance, health care and efforts of restoration. It was such a big success that people wanted to be apart of it. Like it says, "global 2000's problem solving methods have drawn the support from unexpected sources. John moores, a Texas computer mogul, and the owner of the San Diego padres wanted to get involved."

  5. The Global 2000 program was probably Carter's biggest achievement during his post-presidential years in respect to human rights. It helped to improve living conditions in developing countries by policies which included improving health care. This scheme, for the most part, was successful as many people wanted to get involved and show their support.

  7. Although I as a foreigner have never heard about Jimmy Carter before, my first impression of Mr. Carter is a decent Christian man with staggering optimism and extraordinary determination in his personal goal to make this world a better place. Despite the fact he was out of the administration, his everlasting effort in peace making by talking to controversial political leaders like Castro and Previous Russia president to solve international disputes and Mr. Carter has this exceptional size of balls to work as a lone ranger when it is necessary to fulfill his plans, such situation like the neglecting of his effort during several administrations. The article implies that critics are reviling Carter because he seem to be the man out off the norm and heavily impacted by his religious believes when it come to terms of diplomatic issue like in North Korea he told leader of NK that they won’t be sanctioned. Also, he also has been caricatured as a vain and sanctimonious interloper searching for political redemption via a Nobel Peace Prize. One thing I disagree with Mr.Carter with Baptist-missionary sensibility that he prefer peace over justice.

  8. I agree with Dave and Rob that the Global 2000 program was a great achievement. It gained financial support from a variety of sources and the case of Guinea worm dropped. He ad a different view than prior presidents, which is the main reason why he was seen as controversial. However, I like his idea of emphasizing human rights.

  9. The was carter went about fixing the world would cause it to become a little controversial. as Sydney said, the Government is made to separate church and state. so when Cater went about his work in a missionary type of way, he is going against all the things he did in office. I find it funny that when he did it this way, it was much more successful then when he tried to fix things in office. He helped eliminate disease and made third world countries self reliant which is much better then handing the government and large sum of cash.

  10. Carter took many routes when working towards human rights after his presidency. The main things he strived for were international democratization and development, global and domestic health, and urban revitalization. Of his most significant achievements, In my opinion, included his development of the International Negotiation Network, which resolves civil wars and international disputes. He also set peace in Sudan. His motives were controversial partly because he was mixing Christian faith with global peace politics, which "appeases dictators and undermines US foreign policy."

  11. Carter's human rights campaign was questioned by the way in which he did not assert the US's dominance in what he did, but instead to assert religion into everything that he did in foreign countries. Part of what ultimately gave him such a low approval rating is the fact that Americans don't like it when religion and politics are mixed. His greatest achievement, as everyone has said, is the Global 2000 program.

  12. It seems that although Carter fdid care a lot about human rights, he also had the attitude of to much of a moralizer of missionary, which might have seemed slightly arrogant. A lot of his actions had a religious touch of charity for him, which may have been appreciated in supercatholic countries in Latin America, but maybe cause disagreement with others. But it is undeniable, that he made great achievements in human rights, especially in places where the US government had not done a good job in supporting this(enforcements of military dictatorships in order to fight communism).
