Catching up on Chile

Post one question that you still have on Chile and the Cold War.  It can have anything to do with Videla, Ibanez, Alessandri, Frei, or Allende's presidencies, as well as anything about Chile's relationship with the US during the Cold War.

  1. Im still unsure what the economic factors were that influenced America to get involved. or was it simply because of the Cold War agenda? Also, I'm a bit fuzzy on the whole timeline of these events.

  2. What were the Chilen people's views on the different presidents and the state of the country during the cold war? We have learned a lot about the US's perspective, but other than the Allende documentary, we have not heard from the Chilean people!

  3. My question would be; What kind of impression did Allende really have in Chile? Was there a large group of people that did support him? Also, what did US citizens think of this deal in Chile.

  4. I like Sydney's request to have a timeline of events. My question is; How was the US and Chile's relationship viewed by other countries?

  5. I would like to know how justified the US's fears were that Chile was in league with Cuba and the Soviets. They pictured communism in chile as "threat of national security" This seems pretty exaggerated to me, but i'd like to find out more about that.

  8. Same as Mitch, What is the true general impression of Allende in Chileans mind, is he really as as US described aggressive marxists with violent means?

  9. How did the US and Chiles relationship impact what the USSR was doing? did it cause concern or did they see it as a desperate move on the US's part?
